PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner capable of forming a high quality image by scanning in a multibeam system using a plurality of light beams, with its cost reduced. SOLUTION: A rotating polygon mirror is miniaturized by setting respective elements so that, for an example, the size of the rotating polygon mirror is minimized within an extent that a predetermined condition is satisfied while preventing the vignetting of the light beams in a main scanning direction. Thus the cost reduction of apparatus is made possible. Further, the energy consumption and the heat emission are reduced in the driving system of the rotating polygon mirror by miniaturizing the rotating polygon mirror. Accordingly, it is made possible to suppress the deterioration in various optical characteristics such as the increase in the light beam spot diameter, the nonuniformity in the scanning pitch and the variation in the beam pitch in a subscanning direction or the like, due to the variation in temperature.
