PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device which is capable of suppressing dust from adhering to the light-incident and emitting surfaces of a light-modulating section, and to provide a projector. SOLUTION: The light incident surfaces BI3, GI3 and RI3 of liquid crystal light valves 23B, 23G and 23R adhere closely to the light-emitting surfaces BO2, GO2 and RO2 of rod integrators 22B, 22G and 23R, respectively. The light-emitting surfaces BO3, GO3 and RO3 of the liquid crystal light valves 23B, 23G and 23R adhere closely to the light-incident surfaces 100B, 100G and 100R of a cross dichroic prism 100, respectively.
