Provided herein are methods for treating pain such as acute or chronic pain or fever in subject without risking hepatotoxicity. The subject may be at risk of hepatotoxicity if administrated an acetaminophen monomer. The method includes administering a pharmaceutical composition containing an acetaminophen dimer compound, wherein the phenolic hydroxyl groups of two acetaminophen compounds are linked via an ethylene spacer.

A method of treating pain in a patient suffering from cirrhosis, liver cancer, hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis, Gilbert's syndrome, Budd-Chiari syndrome, transthyretin-related hereditary amyloidosis or acetaminophen poisoning, the method comprises administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient and an acetaminophen dimer compound having Formula (1): or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof.
