<p>A flywheel energy storage system configured as an energy storing transmission with a continuously-variable output speed employs a pair of variable inertia flywheels (A, B) for energy storage and transfer. Input clutches and gearing (304) selectively permit coupling either or both of the flywheels to an input shaft (27). Output clutches and gear (300) selectively permit either or both flywheels to be coupled to an output shaft (44) with multiple output shaft speed ranges. The output clutches and gearing permit either or both flywheels to be driven with the output shaft to store energy from braking. A system (309) for automatic control of the flywheels is provided.</p> |
