PURPOSE: To obtain an epox resin excellent in heat resistance and water resistance and useful for sealants, etc., in good productivity by reacting a specific alcohol with an aldehyde, adding water to the reaction product, dispersing the obtained polyhydric phenol in water, distilling off an organic solvent, adding an epihalohydrin, removing the water, and subsequently epoxidizing the residue. CONSTITUTION: The method for producing an epoxy resin comprises condensation-reacting (A) a phenol compound such as phenol or cresol or a naphthol compound such asα-naphthol orβ-naphthol with (B) a hydroxybenzaldehyde compound such as para hydroxybenzaldehyde or salicylaldehyde in (C) an organic solvent such as toluene or xylene, adding water to the reaction mixture, adding (D) an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, dispersing the obtained polyhydric phenol in water, distilling off the component C, adding (E) an epihalohydrin, gravitationally or azeotropically separating the water, and subsequently epoxidizing the residue in the presence of (F) an alkali metal hydroxide.
