PURPOSE: To produce a carbon block, having a high mutual bonding strength and a long life by interposing a resin mortar between bonding surfaces of a pair of carbon blocks and baking the carbon blocks while pressurizing the bonding surfaces. CONSTITUTION: Either or both of opposite faces 1a and 2a in at least a pair of carbon blocks 1 and 2 are coated with a resin mortar S comprising a carbonaceous raw material, wetted graphite and a synthetic resin, etc., and joined. The resultant bonding surfaces are then heated in a reducing atmosphere at >=1300 deg.C sintering temperature while being pressurized through the carbon blocks under a pressurizing force F. The pore diameter in the resin mortar after the baking is <=1μm. The pressurizing is preferably carried out in the direction at a right angle to the bonding surfaces.
