The method involves building a communication controller (KC) on a freely programmable communication arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) that possesses an instruction set and hardware architecture. Multiple instructions are coded in an instruction code of the communication ALU. The multiple instructions are optimized on special communication functions, and logic functional blocks are arranged parallel in the communication ALU for executing the functions. An independent claim is also included for a device for coupling of bus users of an automation system communicating over a serial data bus among each other.
