A method for reducing power consumption of a mobile broadcasting receiver and the mobile broadcasting receiver are provided to reduce the power consumption by changing into a standby mode when the mobile broadcasting receiver enters a shade area. A mobile broadcasting receiver receives a GPS(Global Positioning System) signal(S12). Location information of the mobile broadcasting receiver is obtained by using the GPS signal. It is determined whether the mobile broadcasting receiver enters a shade area by comparing the obtained location information with shade area location information stored in the mobile broadcasting receiver(S14). When the mobile broadcasting receiver enters the shade area, the mobile broadcasting receiver is changed into a standby mode not receiving a broadcasting signal(S15).
