HYDROPHILIC CARBON MATERIAL AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrophilic carbon material useful as a carbon jig for molding glass and to provide a method for producing the hydrophilic carbon material. CONSTITUTION:This hydrophilic carbon material reversely advances water absorption in which water is absorbed at a rate of >=1.0cc/cm<2>.min and is retained in pores and release of absorbed water. Carbon as a material has characteristics of >=10% porosity and >=1mum average pore diameter. The hydrophilic carbon material is obtained by activating porous carbon having >=10% porosity and >=1mum average particle diameter with steam and subjecting the activated material to hydrophilic treatment such as treatment with an alkali hydroxide.
