PURPOSE: To improve the combustion efficiency by reducing the amount of fuel adhering to the wall surface of an auxiliary combustion chamber in all operating conditions of an engine. CONSTITUTION: In a combustion chamber of a diesel engine where an air swirl S is generated in a whirl chamber 11 and simultaneously fuel is injected from a fuel injection nozzle 13 and burnt, a swirl control plate 31 is disposed on the downstream side of the swirl S and in the vicinity of the arrival position of fuel spray G and freely moved by a step motor between the storing position for storing the plate in the inner wall surface of the whirl chamber 11 and the projecting position for streaming a swirl S to the nozzle hole side. According to the detection results of a water temperature sensor and a rotating speed sensor, a control unit drives a step motor to move the swirl control plate 31.
