A telecommunication system 6 is used to enable interaction between a viewer of a television programme provided by a television system and the television system. A viewer watching a television programme provided by a broadcasting system 5 is equipped with a wireless controller module 10 that is able to send/receive, over a packet switched telecommunication system 6 (e.g. GPRS, EDGE, UMTS), packet data messages to/from a management unit 4 associated with the television system. The management unit 4 may be controlled by the television company/studio or by an independent service provider. Packet data messages sent from the management unit 4 may be triggered by a programme event, for example using a time code in the film. For example, a viewer may interact with an educational programme or game show by responding to questions or providing feedback. In a preferred embodiment, the wireless controller module 10 is in the form of a teddy bear provided with various trigger sensors, voice output/input (VoIP), a graphics display 11 for still images, video images or a touch screen and selection buttons 15. The teddy 10 may even have mechanical movement of body parts 14 controlled by the received packet messages. Viewer information may be stored in a database 7 which allows personalisation of the wireless controller module 10.
