PURPOSE: An image file transmitting and receiving method in a mobile phone is provided to enable various forms of message transmission without a necessity of an additional service by a service provider by transmitting/receiving an image file by using a short message service between mobile phones. CONSTITUTION: An MPU(Micro-Processor Unit) is in a picture message edit mode(200) and displays a picture message edit menu(202). When a user selects an image file retrieval(204), the MPU displays an image file list and waits for a user's selection(206). When the user selects an image file(208), the MPU displays the selected image on a screen(210). When the user selects 'confirmation'(212), the MPU sequentially displays the other party number input image and the reachable number input image to receive the other party number and the reachable number(216,218). A short message for transmitting the data of the selected image file as a picture message is generated and transmitted to the other party(220,222). A transmission completion image is displayed(224) and is in a standby mode(226).
