An apparatus for disinfecting fluids comprises a thin flow channel 12 which extends between two members 16 18, an irradiation source 14, an inlet 11 and an outlet such that fluid to be treated flows along the flow channel between the members 16, 18 and is agitated by the rotation of at least one of the members while being subjected to radiation. The members 16, 18 can be flat discs which both rotate and the irradiation source 14 can be one or more lamps which emit ultra-violet light. The relative rotation of the members 16,18 creates a turbulent flow of fluid within the flow channel 12 to ensure that the fluid circulates and swirls close to the opposed surfaces of the discs, thereby ensuring that all parts of the fluid are exposed to an intense dose of ultra-violet radiation. The members are formed of a material which substantially transmits the radiation. In an alternative embodiment, shown in figure 2, the first member (fig 2; 35) is a rotating disc with spiral formations on its surface which forms two flow channels (fig 2:33a, 33b) that are subjected to UV light. |
