A mixing vessel (10) for containing a liquid, comprises a chamber having a lower chamber portion and an upper chamber portion wider than the lower portion, gas inlet means (14) for supplying gas to the lower portion, liquid circulation inducing means (17) and an inclined abutment (24), such that, when gas is supplied via the gas inlet means gas in the form of bubbles initially rises substantially vertically in liquid and is redirected in a substantially horizontal direction by the abutment. The inclined abutment is a non-vertical section of the rear wall and the circulation inducing means is a mixing impeller located adjacent the gas inlet. The widening of the vessel with respect to height is asymmetric. |
