Redundant array of independent disks (RAID) system backup management

Disclosed herein are RAID backup management systems and methods. According to an aspect, a method may include identifying portions of data in each of multiple storage units of a RAID system. The method may also include backing up data in the identified portions to a hot spare. Further, the method may include allocating storage space in the hot spare for the backup based on detection of errors among the storage units.

a plurality of storage units of a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) system; and a RAID controller configured to:
identify portions of data in each of the storage units;back up data in the identified portions to a hot spare;compare at least one characteristic of the storage units to each other;determine allocation of storage space for the hot spare based on the comparison;compare a likelihood of failure of the storage units to each other; andallocate storage space in the hot spare for the backup based on the comparison of the likelihood of failure of the storage units to each other.
