Process for heat treating container preforms (3) made of plastic in a microwave cavity (15), this process comprising the operations consisting in: storing at least one predetermined characteristic parameter of the material or the predetermined volume of material of the preforms (3); loading a preform (3) into the cavity (15); generating an incident flux of microwaves by means of the solid-state generator (16); adjusting the emission frequency of the incident flux of microwaves to a resonant frequency of the loaded cavity (15); from the resonant frequency of the loaded cavity (15) and the stored material parameter or stored volume of material of the preform (3), respectively calculating: the volume of material of the preform (3), or at least one characteristic parameter of the material of the preform (3).
