The mechanism is comprised of a frame-carcass (CC), fixed to the mirror-carrier carcass (CP), and a support frame (CS) fixed to the support (S) joined to the structure of the vehicle, which are linked by a fixing spring (F) which operates permanently in a traction mode. On both sides of the frame-carcass (CC), a transverse extension (12) define respective retraction arms (12a, 12b) whose extremities are provided with serrated grooves (12a', 12b'). The frame-support (CS) has two retraction axes (13a, 13b) in correspondance with the serrated grooves (12a', 12b') of the frame-carcass (CC) wherein they may be close-fitted. Upon folding the mirror-carrier carcass (CP), the frame-carcass (CC) rocks on one or the other of the folding axis (13a, 13b) of the frame-support (CS) so that the external surfaces of the mirror-carrier carcass (CP) and of the support (S) are not subjected to any friction.
