PURPOSE: To obtain a quick, inexpensive, and highly accurate automatic flaw classifying method by which the flaw of an optical fiber can be classified automatically and the degree of damage to the fiber can discriminated. CONSTITUTION: A nominal edge and effective edge in the periphery of the flaw of an optical fiber are automatically discriminated and the difference between a nominal. boundary and effective boundary at least part of the flaw is discriminated, and then, the flaw is classified at least tentatively based on the difference. The classification can be made based on boundary analysis. In another case, the classification is performed by performing automatic focused beam analysis and, according to circumstances, another boundary analysis.
