Test appts. measuring resistance to heat shock of carbon electrode

Sample discs are sliced out of a cylindrical piece of dried 'carbon paste' material. The samples are tested by passing a high current through them in a special test jig. The sample (1) is placed against a stop (14) on a conductive graphite carrier (3). Below the carrier are a metal electrode plate (4), an insulator plate (6) and a support (13). A conductive pin (7) is lowered by a simple machine (10) until its end is inside a circular hole (2) in the middle of the sample disc (1). A current generator then supplies a high power electrical arc for a period of about 30 seconds. The sample is then examined for damage.
