The invention relates to sialic acid derivatives exhibiting an excellent sialidase inhibiting activity or pharmacologically acceptable esters or salts thereof; pharmaceutical compositions (particularly medicine for influenza) containing the derivatives, the esters, or the salts as the active ingredient; use of the derivatives, the esters, or the salts in preparing the pharmaceutical compositions; and methods for the prevention or treatment of diseases (particularly influenza) by administering the derivatives, the esters, or the salts in pharmacologically effective doses to warm-blooded animals (particularly human beings). The sialic acid derivatives are represented by the general formula (1) wherein R<1> and R<2> are each hydrogen or hydroxyl; R<3>, R<4>, R<5>, R<6>, R<7> and R<8 >are each hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, or the like; R<9> is C1-4 alkyl or the like; R<10> is amino, formimidoylamino, acetimidoylamino, guanidino, or the like; n is 1, 2 or 3; and m is 0, 1 or 2.
