It is intended to provide a novel polyvinyl alcohol resin which is excellent in viscosity stability of an aqueous solution, high speed coatability, reactivity with a cross-linking agent and water solubility. The invention relates to the polyvinyl alcohol resin containing a structural unit having as a side chain a carboxyl group-containing long-chain alkyl group represented by the general formula (1).
