PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficacy of known interferon by obtaining a good quality crystal of the recombinant interferon having an altered structure and a function in a high X-ray diffraction resolution to determine a three dimensional structure of the recombinant interferon and to establish a model thereof, and using the structure and model to design drugs.SOLUTION: The present invention provides a crystalline recombinant interferon (rSIFN-co) having (i) an amino acid sequence same as a human consensus interferon, and (ii) an altered three dimensional structure as compared with IFN-α2b. The interferon of the invention exhibits an improved biological activity. The invention also provides a structural model of the interferon useful to a drug screening and/or drug design; and a mimetic of the interferon.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
