PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce mode instability of a fiber amplifier.SOLUTION: Mode instability of a fiber amplifier can be reduced by coupling, for example, splicing a passive multi-mode light fiber of a certain length to an active multi-mode light fiber 16 of the fiber amplifier. When discharging a light to a passive optical fiber 13, some high level lateral modes can be excited in the passive light fiber 13. The high level mode can interfere with a basic mode in the passive multi-mode light fiber 13. However, the interference between discharged modes does not invites a thermal gradient in the passive light fiber 13. When transmitting in the passive multi-mode light fiber 13, an excited light mode looses a mutual coherence, causes the reducing of a contrast of interference pattern between the modes along with a dope core of the active light fiber 16, and can effectively reduce the mode instability in the active light fiber 16.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A |
