PURPOSE:To obtain a varnish composition, containing an aprotic solvent and a specific solvent without eluting a colorant in a color filter or damaging the color filter and useful as a film controlling the liquid crystal orientation in a color liquid crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:This varnish composition contains (A) an aprotic solvent and (B) a solvent, having a higher boiling point or a lower vapor pressure than that of the component (A) and good in compatibility with the component (A) in a varnish composition containing a polyimide precursor. Furthermore, the component (A) is preferably N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-methylcaprolactam, N, N-dimethylacetamide, etc., and the component (B) is expressed by formula I [R and R' are each methyl or ethyl; (n) is 2-4], formula II or III [R is a 4-6C alkyl or phenyl when (n) is 1 and is a 2-6C alkyl or phenyl when (n) is 2 or 3] or formula IV [R is methyl when (n) is 4] and is preferably an alkyl lactate, 3-methyl- or 3-methoxybutanol, etc. |
