Camera with still and motion image capabilities

A digital still camera (10) (DSC) is provided with both still and motion image modes. In the still mode a plurality of high resolution still image files in JPEG format are embedded in corresponding EXIT files stored in a memory (38). In the motion mode a sequence of low resolution still image files in JPEG format are embedded in corresponding EXIF files and stored in a special directory in the memory (44). The low resolution image files are generated at a frame rate that will ensure that non-jerky motion video can later be displayed. In order to avoid unnecessary duplication of hardware, the same JPEG hardware conversion component (32) is used in both the still and motion modes. When the user desires to replay a motion video sequence, a micro-controller (30) in the camera (10) retrieves the low resolution images from the special directory and executes firmware (34) to convert the same into MPEG format to thereby create a motion video sequence that can be displayed on an LCD in the camera (10). High resolution still images can also be displayed on the same LCD display (56) when the camera (10) is in a still replay mode.
