PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the space factor of a coil in a slot in an armature for a rotary electric machine in which a coil that has a pair of coil sides housed in slots positioned on both sides of a salient pole of an armature core, a pair of coil ends extended in parallel with each other in a direction orthogonal to the direction of the length of the coil sides, and a curved portion that is swelled outward and connects both the coil sides and both the coil ends and formed by winding a flat conductor edgewise is wound on a salient pole. SOLUTION: A coil 14U is constructed by bringing flat conductors 19 into close contact with one another by portions that constitute both the coil sides 16. The coil is so shaped that, at portions that constitute both the coil ends 17, the distance between the flat conductors 19 is increased more as it goes away from the curved portion 18.
