PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in a high yield by a simple and profitable method which comprises reacting a specific aromatic halide with an alkanethiol and a base or with an alkanethiol salt. SOLUTION: This method for producing a compound of formula II [for example, ethyl 2-methyl-3-(3-methylisooxazol-5-yl)-4-methylthiobenzoate] comprises reacting (A) an aromatic halide of formula I [X1 and X2 are each a halogen; W is H, cyano, nitro, COOH, a halogen, a 1 to 6C (halogeno)alkyl, a 1 to 6C alkoxy(carbonyl), a 1 to 6C alkylcarbonyl or the like; Y is the substituent of the benzene ring; (n) is 1 to 3] with (B) (i) an alkanethiol of the formula: RSH (R is a 1 to 6C alkyl) (for exauxple, methanethiol) and (ii) a base (for example, potassium carbonate), or (iii) the salt of the component i. The compound is useful as an intermediate for agrochemicals, medicines, and the like, especially compounds having herbicidal activities.
