PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize the whole body to avoid the interference with a car and increase the floor area by providing, within a hoisting drum, a reduction gear mechanism having a planetary gear to transmit the driving force of a motor to the hoisting drum and a brake device for braking the rotation of a rotating shaft. SOLUTION: The driving force of a motor 13 is reduced in speed by a reduction gear mechanism 21 having first and second planetary gears 15, 16 and transmitted to a hoisting drum 20 to rotate the hoisting drum 20, and a car is guided by a guide rail and raised and lowered within an elevator shaft. In general operation, a lever is engaged with a claw, and the claw is held in a rotating position separated from a ratchet 26 in the state where a claw spring is extended. In the hoist 11 of this home elevator, since the motor 13 and the reduction gear mechanism 21 are arranged within the hoisting drum 20, the hoist 11 can be constituted compactly, the interference of the hoist 11 with the car can be avoided, and the floor area of the car can be thus increased.
