<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the yield of light emitting devices excellent in optical characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The light emitting device has a light emitting element, and a wavelength converting member having a fluorescent material which absorbs at least a portion of light emitted from the light emitting device and emits light of a different wavelength. The wavelength converting member includes the fluorescent material and a translucent inorganic material, and it is characterise in that the fluorescent material and the translucent inorganic material are stacked each in the form of a layer, stripe, grid, concentric circle or dot, or stacked combining at least two or more of these shapes. Further, the wavelength converting member comprises at least a first layer, a second layer, and a third layer of more different refractive index than that of the second layer.
