PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus that enable welding to be performed corresponding to change in a groove shape by controlling a welding torch on the basis of a groove shape detected by an image sensor. SOLUTION: In this welding method, in the case of welding a second welding workpiece (E) in the circumferential face to at least one end of a cylindrical workpiece (W) which is supported rotatably around the horizontal axis, a groove shape is detected by an image sensor (8), in the rotating direction in the upper side from a weld zone between the cylindrical workpiece (W) and the second welding workpiece (E) which are rotating in accompaniment, and then on the basis of the groove shape so detected by the image sensor (8), an welding operation is controlled using a welding torch (5).
