PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material capable of improving a charge-discharge characteristic of a lithium ion secondary battery; and to provide a method suitable for manufacturing the negative electrode material. SOLUTION: This negative electrode material includes an outer surface film containing a lithium ion storage member, a hollow part in the outer surface film, and an opening present in the outer surface film. This manufacturing method includes: a coating process for coating a nucleus material surface gasified by heating with a film containing a powder-like lithium ion storage member; and a heating process for gasifying the nucleus material after the coating process.
