PURPOSE: A lamp operating method is provided to automatically turn on a lamp of a pager when a lead key or a mode key is pressed for checking a received message during the night. CONSTITUTION: A current time is set(101) accurately by using a global positioning system(GPS) function of a flex protocol of a pager. A sunrise time and a sunset time are received and stored(102) in a memory(14) by a mail drop function. Whether the set current time is in the range of the stored sunset time and the sunrise time is discriminated(103). If the current time is in the range of the sunset time and the sunrise time, a lamp(20) is turned(107) on for a predetermined time when a lead key or a mode key is pressed(106). If the current time is in the range of the sunrise time and sunset time, an automatic lamp on function is cancelled(104). Therefore, a pager can be used conveniently during the night, and a battery's life is prevented from being shortened.
