The opto-electronic sensor has a monitoring unit (6) for the control of a light emitter (2) and a light receptor (4), electrically coupled with it. A change over switch (14), controllable by the monitoring unit is provided so that alternative activatable current paths (16, 18) are provided. The first current path has the light end element (20) of the light emitter and the second current path is provided as the load (22), whose capacity corresponds to that of the first current path. The light emitter and light receptor are arranged on a common plate within a common housing (8). An independent claim is included for a method.
