A process for preparing sodium cefoxitin is provided to avoid separation of intermediate, increase preparation yield and reduce the preparation time. The process for preparing sodium cefoxitin represented by the formula(1) comprises the steps of: dissolving a compound represented by the formula(2) or its trimethylsilyl derivatives in methylene chloride; reacting the resulting solution with at least one positive chlorine donor selected from ethyl dichlorourethane, N-chloro-succinimide and sodium methylate dissolved in methanol at -80 to -95 deg.C to prepare a compound represented by the formula(4); deacetylating the compound represented by the formula(4) with sodium hydroxide solution to prepare a compound represented by the formula(5); reacting the compound represented by the formula(5) with chlorosulfonylisocyanate in tetrahydrofuran at -45 to -50 deg.C to prepare cefoxitin and separating sodium type of cefoxitin.
