An electron emission type backlight unit and a flat panel display apparatus having the same are provided to increase brightness and secure uniformity while preventing generation of direct arcing between cathode electrodes and anode electrodes by regularly forming a strong electric field at an electron emitting part, thereby restraining deterioration. A front substrate(120) and a rear substrate(100) face each other. Gate electrode parts(200) are arranged on a plane of the rear substrate facing the front substrate for controlling an anode electric field. An insulating part(500) is formed on the gate electrode parts for electric insulation. Cathode electrode parts(300) are formed on the insulating part, crossing the gate electrode parts. First aperture parts are arranged on the cathode electrode parts to expose the gate electrode parts. Second aperture parts are formed at the insulating part connected with the first aperture parts. Electron emitting parts(400) are formed around the first aperture parts for emitting electrons by a gate electric field. Auxiliary electrode parts(220) are formed on the gate electrode parts at the first aperture parts. An anode electrode part(600) is arranged on a plane of the front substrate facing the rear substrate for accelerating electrons emitted by the gate electric field. A light emitting part(700) is arranged on a plane of the front substrate facing the rear substrate for applying visible light.
