Disclosed are compounds of formula (IV-a) provided in greater than 80% chemical purity, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the substituents are defined in the specification. These compounds are useful for treating neurodegenerative disorders by inhibiting amyloid-beta peptide production and may be isolated from black cohosh root or prepared by known synthetic and/or semi-synthetic methods for analogous compounds as described in the specification. These compounds are suitable for treating or lessening the severity of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
