PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for making paper which is a clay based retention system for producing paper therefrom to suffer diminished optical properties. SOLUTION: Process for making paper or paper board comprises, forming an aqueous cellulosic suspension, adding a retention system to the cellulosic suspension, draining the suspension on a screen to form a sheet, and drying the sheet, wherein the retention system comprises a swelling clay which has a TAPPI brightness of at least 70.
