The present invention relates to a positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, which has high capacity, high efficiency and an excellent life characteristic, and also relates to a method of preparing the same, and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same. According to the present invention, provided is the positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, comprising: a compound configured to reversibly intercalate/deintercalate lithium, wherein the compound is represented by chemical formula 1: Li_aM_(1-b)M_bO_(2-z); and a coating layer located on at least part of a surface of the compound represented by chemical formula 1, wherein the coating layer is a composite coating layer comprising a lithium metal oxide, a metal oxide, and/or a combination thereof.
