<p>In an exhaust gas path of an engine, there is disposed an NOx absorbent (18) for absorbing NOx when an air-fuel ratio of the flowing-in exhaust gas is lean and for releasing the absorbed NOx when an oxygen concentration in the flowing-in exhaust gas is lowered. The ratios of alkali metal, alkaline earth or rare earth elements which are carried by the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the downstream side are made lower than those of the alkali metal, alkaline earth and rare earth elements which are carried by the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the upstream side, and reducing power of the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the downstream side is made stronger than that of the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the upstream side. <IMAGE></p> |
