PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser beam welding method by which a welding process for excess weld metal (penetration bead) to repair a recess at the lower parts of mating faces is eliminated in the butt weld of a narrow groove, and a stable penetration bead which does not cause the recess can be formed only by welding from the groove side. SOLUTION: In the method for butt welding base material 1 having a groove 14 and a mating face 15, the mating face 15 parts are irradiated with a laser 4 from the groove 14 side to melt the mating face 15 parts when welding the mating face 15 parts of the base materials 1, and then a filler metal 7 in a quantity set according to a groove 14 angle is supplied to the melting places of the mating face 15 parts.
