摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing apparatus which reliably focus an object irrespective of a size of the object and a distance to the object. SOLUTION: A telescopic optic system for moving focus adjust lenses 12 along a light axis for making focus adjustment and a pair of CCD line sensors for receiving an image formed by the telescopic optic system with a reticle as the center are included. In addition, an arithmetic control circuit 23 for calculating a defocus based on AF sensor data output from the CCD line sensors is included. The arithmetic control circuit 23 detects a contrast based on the AF sensor data from the widest focus detection region of the CCD line sensors at the time of automatic focus adjustment. When the contrast is at a first predetermined value or higher, the contrast is detected based on the AF sensor data of a focus detection region extending symmetrically with respect to the reticle as the center, and a defocus amount is calculated based on the AF sensor data of the narrowest focus detection region among the focus detection regions with its contrast of a second predetermined value or higher for moving the focus adjust lenses 12.
