In a storage system having moveable storage devices, a method comprising: a motion controller receiving movement related data of a storage device from at least one sensor associated with the storage device; wherein the storage device and the motion controller are mounted on a translating sled, which is configured for movement between a first end of travel position and a second end of travel position and the method further comprises monitoring movement of the translating sled between the first end of travel position and the second end of travel position to generate the movement related data; and in response to the received movement related data indicating at least one pre-identified condition, issuing a park command that triggers the reading head of the storage device to enter a parked state in which the storage device is protected from damage that can occur due to mechanical motion of the reading head while the pre-identified condition exists; wherein the motion controller includes a motion sensor and a position sensor and is communicatively coupled to the motion sensor and the position sensor such that the motion controller receives acceleration data and position data that corresponds to movement of the translating sled.
