The device (1) comprises a brake mechanism in a housing (11). The housing is supported by at least one roller (2) opposite the horizontal upper surface of the rail. The roller moves horizontally to take up the braking forces of the magnetic brake. To compensate for wear on the roller its axis (8) is mounted in a slider (9) in an angled guide. A tightening mechanism (3) comprises a spring (4) which presses the roller back into the normal position while the braking reaction force compresses the spring. A hydraulic drive (5) moves the slider while the spring returns it to a position where the air gap between the brakes and the horizontal is reset to the selected spacing.
