The shield consists of a flat, bendable resilient band (2) with porous material (3) fixed or loosely arranged along its length, and a locking device (4) such as a toggle clamp or clamp screw attached to its ends. The porous material may comprise a knitted metal thread filled with fibre material, or it may be a sponge material, and may optionally include a crease which protrudes into the gap (5) between the flanges (70) of a pipe joint to prevent movement due to vibration. The band may also include pins along its length to protrude into the gap. The shield has sufficient width to span the gap, and when bent around the joint and secured in place the material (3) can at least partially absorb fluid and reduce the spray to a trickle should the gasket (6) fail. |
