PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector, wherein the time taken until the stationary drive of a lamp from the start of the drive is shortened while securing the life of a lamp by restricting a current flowing to the lamp immediately after starting the drive. SOLUTION: The lamp 2 of the projector is driven by a ballast 3 under the control of a control part 7. The ballast 3 has a power control part 3a controlling power to be supplied to the lamp 2, a current limit circuit 3b and a voltage detection part 3c. When the drive of the lamp 2 is started, the current limit circuit 3b performs current limiting so that the current flowing to the lamp 2 may be smaller than that in the stationary drive, thereby protecting the lamp 2. When the voltage value of the lamp 2 detected by the voltage detection part 3c attains a predetermined voltage value smaller than that in the stationary drive, the current limit circuit 3b releases the current limiting, thereby performing the stationary drive of the lamp 2.
