PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device for applying a magnetic field in the direction of easy magnetization of a sensor element made of a magnetoresistance effect film and for easily detecting magnetic particles of soft magnetism. SOLUTION: This detection device comprises the sensor element, where a first magnetic film (detection layer), a non-magnetic film, and a second magnetic film (magnetization fixing layer) are stacked, in this order, a power supply for supplying current to a sensor element, a voltage for detecting mean for detecting the voltage of the sensor element, and a magnetism generating means for applying the magnetic field in the easy magnetization direction of the detecting layer. The detection device detects magnetic particles, based on the intensity of the magnetic field applied to the sensor element and the magnitude of the voltage of the sensor element. The magnetization direction of the second magnetic film is parallel to the direction of the magnetic field applied from the magnetism generating means, the first magnetic film is one where the magnetization is reversed at 100 Oes or higher, and the magnetic field applied from the magnetism generating means directs in one anisotropy direction of the second magnetic film.
