PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner capable of causing a plunger to sufficiently and rapidly exhibit a hydraulic damping force at the time of starting an engine after the engine is stopped and left stopped for a long time to prevent a timing chain from flapping for avoiding abnormal sound of the timing chain by securing an oil reservoir chamber for feeding oil to a high oil pressure chamber in the plunger as large as possible and reducing the number of parts. SOLUTION: The hydraulic tensioner 100 includes a plunger-biasing spring 130 and a check valve unit 140. The plunger-biasing spring 130 is telescopically received in the high pressure oil chamber R formed between a plunger-accommodating hole 112 in a housing body 110 and the rear end of the plunger 120, and biases the plunger 120 in a protruding direction. The check valve unit 140 is press-fit in the rear end of the plunger 120, and blocks reverse flow of high pressure oil of the high pressure oil chamber R communicating with the oil reservoir chamber P formed in the overall region of the inside of the plunger 120.
