A method for detecting the presence of a hydrocarbon deposit in a geographical location, the method comprising detecting at the location the presence of a target polynucleotide encoding a protein capable of metabolising a hydrocarbon. The presence of the target polynucleotide is indicative of the presence of the hydrocarbon deposit. The protein capable of metabolising the hydrocarbon can be a biphenyl dioxygenase, a toluene monooxygenase, or one of several other similar enzymes, and the target polynucleotide may be detected using PCR. |
