A method of treating hearing loss in a subject in need thereof, comprising oral administration of a 1-aminocyclohexane derivative selected from the group consisting of neramexane and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein the 1-aminocyclohexane derivative is administered at a dose of about 50 mg/day, and wherein treatment results in alleviation of at least one symptom of hearing loss.
