PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material having a long cycle life; and to provide a battery using it. SOLUTION: This negative electrode material is formed of Si alloy powder containing Si and any one kind, or two or more kinds of Cu, Ni and Co as constituent elements. The Si alloy powder is synthesized by a single roll method or an atomization method, and has an eutectic phase 11 including an intermetallic compound phase 11A containing at least Si and one kind within a group comprising Cu, Ni and Co as constituent elements, and a phase 11B of Si; and a primary crystal phase 12 of Si dispersed in the eutectic phase 11.
